Salt and Light

Jesus made a few interesting statements concerning our relationship to the world.  In John 8:12 He said that “I am the light of the world”.  But then in Matthew 5:14 He said to His disciples that they were “the light of the world” and also the “salt of the earth” (5:13).  I used to do some camping back in the day and it was indispensable to have a source of light so I used a propane lantern (before the days of extremely efficient LED lighting).  It’s interesting how a lantern works.  The mantle, which produces light as the gas burns, is basically a silk sack that has been impregnated with a variety of oxides.  The first time a new mantle is used, it is lit and the silk burns away leaving behind a shell of oxides.  It is this shell then that produces light as the gas burns.  No light is produced if the mantle is not connected to the fuel source. 

     When we come to Christ, there is in a sense a burning away as the old man dies and is buried in baptism with Christ and raised to new life (Col. 2:12).  When we are born again, we all of a sudden become this new thing in Christ where we are able to manifest His light and love to others.  We have become mantles that will produce light as long as we are connected to Him.  We alone as Christians have this ability, and not of ourselves, but because we have been born again (cf. 2 Cor. 2:16; 4:7).  To be salt and light on His behalf is a wonderful thing.

     Since moving to the UK a few years ago, the Lord has given me many opportunities to share the Gospel with people in a supernaturally natural sort of way.  It’s really quite a simple message, that we’re all broken on the inside as a result of the sin that entered the human race through Adam and Eve but that because God loved the world He sent His Son Jesus to die on the cross as the atoning sacrifice for our sin.  Because Jesus was the sinless Son of God, He rose from the dead after three days and now anyone who believes and calls upon His name will be saved.  It’s a simple message and to some it appears to be foolishness, “but to us who are being saved it is the power of God” (1 Cor. 1:18).  It’s the greatest message in all the world and one worth sharing!

CC Bible College York

We’ve got a great group of students this semester representing England, America, Israel, Spain, and Finland.  This weekend we will be taking some of them to the British Museum and also to the British Library in London to see some of the biblical artifacts and manuscripts held there.

     This is my fifth semester and each one has a different vibe to it.  I am teaching the Book of Acts and it has been a great blessing.  This past week was speaker’s week where the whole Bible College went to the Yorkshire Dales for a time of seeking the Lord and hearing His voice.  Along this theme, I recently read a great biography of Oswald Chambers (McCasland, David.  Oswald Chambers: Abandoned to God.  Grand Rapids: Discovery House, 1993).  Chambers had a Bible College that operated in London from 1911-15, deciding to close it down shortly after the outbreak of the First World War in order to minister to soldiers in North Africa.  The biography describes a time where Chambers along with his family and students from the Bible College went to Askrigg in the Yorkshire Dales for a time of refreshing.  It’s interesting that we’re doing the same sort of thing in the same place (Redmire is about 7 miles from Askrigg) about a hundred years later.  Seven students were baptized in the Ure River at the end of the week.

Prison Ministry

I have been involved in prison ministry since I arrived in the UK a few years ago.  I recently went through the application process for a paid chaplaincy position which had become available in HMP Humber prison.  I did not get the position but during the interview process I gave a sermon before a panel which included the governor of the prison and the managing chaplain who is a Muslim imam.  In the sermon I gave a clear presentation of the gospel.  I felt like the Lord wanted me to go through the process with my best foot forward and leave the outcome with Him, so that’s what I did.  I still go into the prison monthly with our CC York team and usually either lead worship or teach.  There are some regulars who come to our service every month so we have been able to establish good relationships with them.  The Lord is doing a good work in the lives of some of these prisoners so please keep them lifted up in prayer.

It’s a tremendous blessing to be a part of the body of Christ here in York.  The church is an interesting blend of Bible College students, university students, and congregants from various parts of Yorkshire.  I’ve had a few opportunities to teach on Sundays this semester and am also involved in leading worship which is one of my favorite things to do.  Some things on the horizon are the CCUK Youth retreat at the end of May followed by the Pastors and Leaders conference.  Pastor Dave is also interesting in doing outreaches this summer in some of the coastal areas.

Hull Outreach

We continue to do outreach in Hull every Friday evening followed by a Bible study.  We are currently studying through I Corinthians.  The Bible study is still small but we’ve had the opportunity to share the message of the Gospel with many people on the streets over the past few years.  Please pray that the Lord would bring increase in His timing from the seed that has been sown.  We plan on outreaching with music again as the weather is warming up.

December 2017

The Journey

     As I come to the end of my third year on the mission field, I’ve been reflecting on the idea of the journey in relation to life and God’s faithfulness in the midst of it.  As I was preparing to leave New Jersey in December 2014, a few of my former coworkers gave me a slate plaque with the word “journey” in large letters followed by the oft-quoted Jeremiah 29:11, “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”

While that word was given by the prophet in an entirely different context, the Lord spoke to me on that December day as I was leaving my cubicle for the last time that He was taking me on a journey, and that He had good plans which included a hope and a future for my life.  Even in the face of limited luggage space and airline weight restrictions, I decided to take that plaque along for the journey as a reminder of God’s faithfulness and the word He had spoken to me.  It has hung on the walls of rooms I have stayed in along the way.

     From the moment we become Christians we embark upon this epic spiritual journey as the filmstrip of our lives plays out.  We often refer to our life with the Lord as our “walk”.  Abraham went on a journey as he was called out of Ur of the Chaldees- looking for a city with foundations whose builder and maker is God (Heb. 11:10).  Jacob went on a journey and had a vision of angels ascending and descending on a ladder to heaven (Gen. 28:12).  Joseph and Mary went on a journey and in so doing participated in the fulfillment of prophecy concerning the birth of Jesus the Messiah in Bethlehem (Micah 5:2).

     My journey in recent years has taken me first to Austria where I served for a year at Schloss Heroldeck and then to York, England where I have served for the past two years.  The Lord put a handful of ministries on my plate early on after arriving in York.  One of these is teaching at the Bible College.  I just finished teaching through the gospel of Luke and will teach Acts in the upcoming spring semester.

     Another involvement is the prison ministry where I have had the opportunity to lead worship, teach, and pray with the prisoners.  An interesting development in regard to this is that a paid part-time chaplaincy position has recently become available in the HMP Humber prison where we minister and I felt a leading from the Lord to apply, so I did, and as it stands now I have an interview at the end of January so prayers are appreciated.

     We also continue our outreach to Hull on a weekly basis.  The Bible study remains small with mainly people from York, but it gives us a reason to be in Hull every week and we’ve been doing worship music on the streets and as a result have had numerous conversations with both Christians and non-Christians.  Please pray for God’s will to be done in this great city.

In other news, Calvary Chapel York recently celebrated its twentieth anniversary; Terry and Nancy Clark were on hand to help out with a musical celebration of the event.  It was fascinating to watch the photo stream in the sanctuary of what the Lord has done in York over the years.

Well, that’s the update for now.  I will be in the United States from Dec. 14^th-Jan. 8^th.  I will be speaking at my home church (Calvary Chapel Gateway) on Sunday, Dec. 17^th.  Wishing all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year in the Lord!

It has been a busy spring semester at the Bible college.  I am currently teaching verse by verse through Acts and Romans.  This semester we have students from Austria, Germany, England, Israel, Italy, the Netherlands, Romania, and the United States.  It’s a blessing to see the Lord at work in the midst of a diverse international body.  Last week we were away in the Yorkshire Dales for a time of seeking the Lord; we were also blessed with a series of messages from our guest speaker, Daniel Massieh.

The Lord’s hand of blessing has been on the church as well.  CC York is comprised of people from York, university students (representing many countries including China, Singapore, and Taiwan), and Bible college students.  It’s quite a dynamic mix of individuals from all ages and diverse backgrounds that the Lord has brought together to worship.  I’ve had the opportunity to teach at a few of the Sunday evening services recently which has been a blessing.  I’m also in the regular worship leading rotation.  Some of us from the church recently traveled to Oxford for the annual CC “Teach the Word” conference where messages were given from 1 Thessalonians.  It was a great day of teaching and connecting with brothers and sisters from other Calvary Chapels in the UK.

Prison Ministry
I’m still actively involved in the prison ministry.  Once a month a group consisting of Bible college students, university students, and church members spend a Sunday morning in the HMP Humber Prison.  We have a time of worship followed by a message from the Bible and then enjoy a time of fellowship with the prisoners where we talk with them and pray for any needs they may have.  An interesting event that happened recently involves a man named Leon.  About a year ago I met him on the streets of York where he was homeless.  I would see him several times per week and would stop and talk and pray with him.  Several months later I ran into him on the streets of Hull while walking and praying.  I had not seen him for several months but on a recent prison visit as we entered the chapel he was there and he called out my name.  He has indicated that he is a Christian but struggles with different issues.  Please pray for him.  It is interesting how our paths keep crossing.

The Hull Bible study continues; we are currently studying through the gospel of John.  We did an outreach with some Bible college students in March.  One of the other churches in Hull (Jubilee Church) has an outreach where they feed breakfast to the homeless.  We assisted with this and ministered to the people who attended and afterward spent some time playing table tennis and pool with them.  The next day we did an outreach in the city center with worship music and evangelism.

Winter 2017

Hello friends, here's the update from the UK...

Christmas

In December we had the opportunity to sing Christmas carols on all of the wings at HMP Humber prison.  We started at 8:30 in the morning and wrapped up at 5:30 in the afternoon.  It was a bit of a marathon but it was an absolute blessing to be able to bring a little bit of the light and love of Christ into the darker places where these men spend the majority of their daily lives.  The prisoners enjoyed it and it brought a lightness to the atmosphere.  We also sang Christmas carols for an event at the Village of Stamford Bridge which is about 10 miles from York.  Pastor Dave has a passion to reach the towns and villages of Yorkshire and this was another opportunity for us to bring the love of Jesus to one of these communities.

By the grace of God I passed my UK driving test.  The practical (road) test lasts 40 minutes and is quite easy to fail.  I needed to pass it by February 1^st in order to keep driving so a big thank you to all who prayed!  Thank you Jesus.

USA Visit

It was a blessing to be able to spend time with friends and family in New Jersey over the Christmas holidays.  I had the opportunity to teach and share about what the Lord is doing in the UK at my home church (Calvary Chapel Gateway) while I was there.

Bible College

Preparations are in full swing for the spring 2017 semester which kicks off February 3.  I will be teaching verse by verse through the book of Acts.  It looks like we will have close to 50 students this semester, which is quite an increase from the past few semesters.

Hull Outreach

The weekly Bible study continues in Hull.  Please pray for wisdom in reaching out to the city and that the Lord would grant doors of utterance to proclaim the message of the gospel (Col. 4:3).  Pray for a man named Scott with whom I shared the gospel the other day.  Last week I was able to sit down and have coffee with the pastor of one of the other churches in Hull.  It was a really good meeting and he expressed the need for other churches to be planted in Hull.  Pray for the Lord’s will to be done in this great city. As I have mentioned in previous posts, Hull has received the designation of “UK City of Culture” for 2017 and the events have begun which celebrate this, bringing many visitors to the city.  Hull has a rich maritime history but the recent completion of the Siemens factory marks a new era as wind turbine parts begin to roll off the assembly line.  One of the blades measuring 246 feet is currently on display in the city center.  These massive turbines will be assembled in the North Sea where they will generate electricity for the UK.  But more than electricity, we need a move of the Holy Spirit! (Zech. 4:6)

Calvary Chapel Bible College York

It has been a busy semester here at the Bible college.  I am currently teaching through the Gospel of John which has been a great blessing.  Last month we went away with the students to the Yorkshire Dales for speaker’s week, a time of reflection in a beautiful pastoral setting with green hills and many sheep.  In addition to spending time with the Lord, we enjoyed some great Bible teachings from guest speakers.  Peter Will from CC Hanover, Germany shared several messages.

Things at the church have been quite busy as well.  The church has a diverse makeup of university students (York University and York Saint John’s), Bible college students, and regular attendees from the community. This makes for a dynamic international fellowship.   There are quite a few university students from Hong Kong and China who come to the church and will at some point be heading back to their respective countries so it is exciting to ponder how the Lord might eventually use them.

I am still in the worship leading rotation at the church, which has been a blessing.  When I became a Christian, I didn’t play guitar and never intentionally set out to become a worship leader; it’s just something that God gave me over time for which I am grateful.  I am also still actively involved in the prison ministry.  At present we are going into HMP Humber Prison once a month on a Sunday to minister to the inmates.  We conduct a service which includes worship, teaching, prayer, breaking bread (or biscuits), and fellowship- sort of like Acts 2:42!

Hull Update: Bible Study

Through a series of events, the Lord opened the door to begin a weekly Bible study in Hull back in July. The study has been slow going with a small handful of people who come with me from York but it has been rich with the Lord’s presence.  We worship the Lord, have a Bible study, and spend time interceding for the city.  I usually come to Hull one other day per week besides the Bible study day and the Lord nearly always brings at least one person across my path with whom I am able to share the Gospel.  We believe that the Lord is wanting to do a work in the city but we are in a season of prayer and sowing seed wherever it has the potential to take.  We brought a team of Bible college students over last week and did an outreach with music and evangelism in the city center.  The Lord gave us perfect weather (for England; no rain!) and our group had quite a few conversations with people as Dave and I played worship music.  Please pray for the Lord’s will in Hull!

I recently passed the theory (written) test for my UK driving license.  I am scheduled to take the practical (road) test on January 11.  The test lasts forty minutes and I am told that it is easy to fail the first time due to technicalities; please pray that I pass it the first time around!

USA Visit

I will be in America from December 16 through January 3 and will be teaching Sunday morning (12/18) at Calvary Chapel Gateway in Northfield, NJ.

Paul's Update from England

Hull Update: Bible Study

The Lord has opened the door to begin a weekly Bible study in the city of Hull at the Victoria Dock Village Hall beginning July 20.  Lord willing I will be teaching through the Gospel of John.  Hull’s proper name is Kingston upon Hull but these days it is referred to simply as Hull.  It is the hometown of the abolitionist William Wilberforce and also the place where Hudson Taylor studied medicine in preparation for missionary work in China.  Hull is a city with a population of around 250,000 and is situated about an hour east of York on the Humber River which flows into the North Sea.  It has faced significant economic and social issues since the decline of the fishing industry in the 1970's.  About ten years ago it was ranked the worst place to live in the UK by a particular group of researchers, although not all would agree with this conclusion.  The city has received the designation “UK City of Culture” for the year 2017 and is currently getting a makeover in preparation for the forthcoming festivities.  Folks from Calvary Chapel York have been praying for several years for an outreach Bible study to begin in Hull and the Lord seems to be putting things together for this particular season.  I have been going there regularly for the last 3 or 4 months to simply walk and pray and the Lord has brought some people across my path and provided a meeting location.  Prayers are greatly appreciated as this is a step of faith.

Prison Ministry

Calvary Chapel York has an active prison ministry.  Twice per month on Sundays we go into HMP Humber prison and have a service for the prisoners.  I've had the opportunity to both lead worship and to give the message in this ministry.  We also have a time of fellowship at the end and pray with any of the prisoners who have needs.  The Humber prison is not far from Hull and a number of the prisoners are from Hull so it is interesting to be able to connect with them before they are released.

CC York operates a popular coffee shop (Gatehouse Coffee) right on the ancient city wall at Walmgate.  I have been volunteering in this ministry and getting up to speed on the espresso machine.  The coffee shop is frequented by church members and university students who study nearby as well as the general public.

Calvary Chapel UK Pastors and Leaders Conference

CC York hosted a conference in early June for those involved in ministry in various Calvary Chapels throughout the UK.  It was a wonderful time of fellowship and renewed vision in the Lord.  The theme of the conference was “Spring Up, O Well” (Numbers 21:17) with the teachings pointing to our need and desire for a fresh work of the Holy Spirit to spring up in our own lives and in the ministries that we serve in.

“Spring up, O well!  All of you sing to it—the well the leaders sank, dug by the nation’s nobles, by the lawgiver, with their staves” (Num. 21:17-18)

Brexit Vote

As you are likely aware, the United Kingdom has voted to leave the European Union.  No one is sure of what will ultimately happen at this point, but the Lord is in control and it presents yet another opportunity to trust in Him.  I will not be directly affected since I am a British citizen living in the UK.  It is interesting that the Lord moved me here from Austria ahead of the vote; British citizens will likely face greater difficulties living in EU countries once the terms of the withdrawal have been negotiated.

Prayer Requests

Spiritual warfare particularly in relation to the Hull Bible study; that the Lord would both send in the right people to assist and also draw people from Hull to the study; the ability to effectively and simply communicate the message of the Gospel by the power of the Holy Spirit.

Springtime in England

Hello friends, hope all is well.  Spring has arrived in England.  Lots of rain but the grass is usually nice and green and there are many flowers popping up.  It's a reminder that God is always bringing new life!

Calvary Chapel York

I have been serving in York (in the north of England) for just over three months and it has been a blessing to be here.  The church is a wonderful mix of Bible college students, university students, and regular attendees.  I've had some recent teaching opportunities at our men's breakfast and also for the Sunday evening service.  I have also been able to lead worship a few times for student devotions and for the Sunday evening service.

CCY Bible College

I've been blessed this semester to be able to fill in for a number of classes in the Bible college including Galatians, Samuel, Matthew, and Acts.  Between these, I nearly had a full teaching schedule.   It looks like I will have my own class for the fall semester.

Since getting settled in in York, I've had the opportunity among other things to be involved in the prison ministry.  Twice per month on  Sundays we go into HMP Humber prison and have a service for the prisoners.  I've had the opportunity to both lead worship and to teach in this ministry.  We also have a time of fellowship at the end and pray with any of the prisoners who have needs.

Teach the Word Conference in Oxford

The Calvary Chapels in England recently gathered in Oxford for a one-day conference in the university town of Oxford.  There were four teachings given by various Calvary Chapel pastors focused on Acts 2:42: "And they continued steadfastly in the apostles’ doctrine and fellowship, in the breaking of bread, and in prayers".  It was a great day of fellowship and a time of connection with others in the Calvary movement in England.  While in Oxford, we were able to visit the pub (The Eagle and Child) where C.S. Lewis used to gather with J.R.R. Tolkien and others from the Oxford literary group the Inklings.

Please be praying for the upcoming annual Calvary Chapel UK Pastors and Leaders conference (June 6-9); this is a wonderful time where folks from the various Calvary ministries across the UK come together for teachings, fellowship, and to be refreshed in the Lord.  "Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity!  It is like the precious oil upon the head, running down on the beard, the beard of Aaron, running down on the edge of his garments.  It is like the dew of Hermon, descending upon the mountains of Zion; for there the Lord commanded the blessing— life forevermore" (Psalm 133:1-3).

Prayer Requests

Wisdom in buying a car, a man named Hussein whom I shared the gospel with on a recent trip to Hull, and also a homeless man named Leo.  Additionally, the UK will be holding a referendum (vote) on June 23 on whether or not to remain in the European Union.  As the outcome of the vote will have significant ramifications either way, pray for the Lord's will regarding this.
